It is essential that microbiological safety cabinets are kept in good working order, as they are the first line of defence for people working in laboratories. The cabinets purge airborne contaminants from the work area and ensure that the environment is free from hazards for other people nearby.

Because safety cabinets are confined spaces, there are special requirements for equipment used to decontaminate them. No-Touch Decontamination Systems are increasingly being employed in these areas, and the Phileas Genius, which Tecomak Environmental Services supply, is particularly well-suited, as it is specifically designed to use with small volumes.

The Genius, pictured above, has recently been shown in testing to be a highly effective choice for decontaminating safety cabinets in comparison to other products currently on the market. Here we look at some of its key advantages.

Size and Mobility

The Phileas Genius is very small and can be used inside microbiological safety cabinets, unlike some rival products. It can be operated either with a battery or plugged into the mains, making it very agile and mobile.

With a rotating head and height-adjustable foot, the Genius can be easily inserted into biosafety cabinets and is designed especially for treating very small volumes between 0.25m3 ad 10m3. Its spinning disc technology, which allows for very efficient diffusion of hydrogen peroxide, also makes it simple and effective to use.

Remote Operation and Cycle Reporting

The unit can even be operated remotely, using the Phileas app on any tablet device. It also offers cycle reporting via the use of the app, unlike other products on the market.

Disinfectant

The Phileasafe disinfectant used in this model provides lower concentration levels of hydrogen peroxide than some other products on the market. It has a shorter cycle, meaning cabinets can be brought back into use more quickly. It also costs less to run than some competitors’ products, and its canister has a long lifespan even after its been opened.

This disinfectant uses a solution containing just 7.9% hydrogen peroxide. Some competitors’ products use a concentration of 20% or more, which may potentially be damaging to work surfaces and equipment.

Effectiveness

Phileas’ method of airborne disinfection has been found to be second only to Formaldehyde in its efficacy but without any of the associated risks. It is fully compliant with AFNOR NF T72-281 (2014), the latest version of the standard additional independent assessment from UK Government labs and registered overseas laboratories.

The Phileas units are ideal for decontaminating safety cabinets and laboratories, because they are easy to use, compact and highly mobile with a simple disinfectant filling mechanism.

The Genius is known for providing a very cost-effective performance and low on-going costs for chemicals and maintenance in the long term.
